The Genting Village
, further south of Tekek, is enveloped
by a serene and rustic atmosphere. The tranquil beach boasts stretches
of golden sand ideal for long strolls by the shore. Genting
is a village with numerous resorts, mosque, clinic, restaurants,
a diving centre, a mini market and some small souvenir shops.
There's the ubiquitous karaoke and disco weekends as well. This
village is the favourite destination of Chinese tourists, mainly
Singaporeans on holiday. If you're feeling particularly energetic,
you can take a 30-minute walk all the way up north to explore
Paya Village.
Genting is also
where's you'll find the Mausoleum of the Pahang State Bendahara,
who died in 1803. The Bendahara (Prime Minister) and his wife
were on their way back to Pahang
when a storm broke out near Tioman Island.
Their ship sank and all on board perished. The bodies of the Bendahara
and his wife were then taken to Tioman Island.
A site in between Paya village and
Genting was chosen as the burial
ground. The bodies were then cleaned and bathed using water from
a nearby river, which was later named Sungai
Air Raja (Royal River).
